Child Sexual Abuse: Know it!
There is nothing as pure as the innocence of a child. There is
nothing as worse as this innocence getting killed. Child sexual abuse kills the
innocence of a child-like nothing else.
Child sexual abuse, also known as child molestation, is a
form of child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent uses a child for
sexual stimulation.
The World Health Organisation or WHO defines child sexual
abuse as ‘ The involvement of a child in sexual activity that he or she does
not fully comprehend, is unable to give informed consent to, or for which the child is not developmentally prepared and cannot give consent, or that violate
the laws or social taboos of society. Child sexual abuse is evidenced by this
activity between a child and adult or another child who by age or development
is in a relationship of responsibility, the trust of power, the activity being
intended to gratify or satisfy the needs of the other person. This may include
but is not limited to:
- · The inducement or coercion of child to engage in any unlawful sexual activity;
- · The exploitative use of child in prostitution or other unlawful sexual practices;
- · The exploitative use of children in pornographic performances and materials'
Around the globe, 19.7% for females and 7.9% for males is
the data cited for child sexual abuse in A Clinical Psychology Review in the
year 2009. Most child sexual abuses are
performed by men. The data regarding child molestation in India is even more
painful.
According to NCRB, 109 children were sexually abused every
day in India in the year 2018. The data of THORN 2017 states that one out of
three children can tell no one about the sexual abuse.
Let us discuss the types of child sexual abuse:
- · Sexual Assault: In child sexual assault, an adult uses a minor for the purpose of sexual gratification or satisfaction, which can include rape and sexual penetration.
- · Sexual Exploitation: In child sexual exploitation, an adult victimizes a minor for advancement, sexual gratification which includes prostituting a child, and creating or trafficking in child pornography.
- · Sexual Grooming: In sexual grooming, the offender manipulates or victimizes the minor more accepting of their advances. Sexual chat rooms are such examples. Making a child give in to sexual advances in return of favors such as gifts also can also be included in sexual grooming. Physical violence while sexual grooming is rare.
Most of the time, the child who is sexually abused has no
idea that he or she is being molested. The common notion which is being
transferred from parents to children is ‘Do not talk to strangers.’ In cases of
child molestation, strangers are molesters in a lesser number of cases. Most of
the child molestations are done by known and trusted caregivers including someone
close in family e.g. parents, grandfather, relatives, and friends. Someone from
the neighborhood might be a performer of child sexual abuse. One of the most
prominent forms of child sexual abuse against girls is found in child marriage
by their spouses.
A child may be a victim of sexual abuse for weeks and years
without knowing about it and without being able to speak about it despite
knowing it. A pedophile or the one who sexually connects with a child often
makes a child go through a gradual process of sexualizing. A victimised child
might also be threatened by the predator to make him or her not reveal the
incident, ‘If you tell anyone, I will kill your parents.’
The lack of sexual education in children, not discussing the
concept of good touch and bad touch with them makes it easier for the predator
to victimize a child into sexual abuse. A child aged 2 to 3 years lacks the
knowledge to differentiate between love and sexual abuse and therefore becomes
an easy target for the predator.
Many times, when children try to tell parents about the
sexual abuse they have undergone, they are silenced out of shame and family-pressure which increases the guts of the predators to continue assaulting
children. Sometimes, the children are ignored as they are thought of as making up
stories.
Child sexual abuse completely changes the thought process,
security, self-confidence, and self-image of a child and makes him feel a
victim. The feeling of being a victim halts a child’s progress of education and
development of skills. The effects of child sexual abuse may be more drastic
and long-lasting than they appear. The incidents may be engraved in a child’s
mind for a lifetime and may show adverse effects in adulthood if healing and
treatment have not been initiated at the right time.
The tender age needs to be a victor and not a victim!
