Adenomyosis: Painful and Disturbing

  Before we understand what adenomyosis is, there is one part of the woman’s body one should be familiar with.   It is her uterus. The uterus is a muscular organ which is hollow and is located between the urinary bladder and the rectum in the female pelvis.   It is pear-shaped and is divided into four regions i.e. fundus (which is the upper-most rounded portion of the uterus), corpus (body), cervix, and cervical canal.       There are three layers of the uterus, namely, endometrium, myometrium, and perimetrium. These three layers form the uterine wall in a normal uterus. The endometrium is the innermost layer and is made up of epithelial cells.   Myometrium is the middle layer and consists of smooth muscles.
